United Way for Southeastern Michigan and Panera Bread invite you to join us for Family Fun Day at the Panera Bread bakery-cafes in Dearborn Heights and Chesterfield on December 10 from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm.
This free event will include reading activities, craft projects and cookie decorating for the kids. Parents, while your children are busy playing, representatives from United Way will be available to help you learn about the free resources available you through our Early Learning Communities, a program that helps ensure children start school prepared and ready to learn.

The Corporation for National and Community Service has announced that United Way’s early childhood efforts will be awarded a $4 million grant from the Social Innovation Fund! In fact, United Way for Southeastern Michigan is one of just five grant recipients nationwide. Read More »

It is not a surprise to me that I am a reader, nor is it surprising that my brother and sister always have their heads in a book as well. We were raised by two parents who loved to read- not only for their own pleasure, but to us as well. In fact, there was never a night in my house that we went to bed without having a book, (or two or five) being read aloud for all of us to enjoy. [Read more...]

One of my most treasured early memories is reading Go, Dog. Go! to my little brother. I was probably only six at the time – he was three – and he would beg me to read that book to him, night after night. Scientifically, the book introduces concepts such as color and relative position with simple language and humor, but I didn’t know that at the time. I just knew that I loved the admiration in my little brother’s face as I read to him nightly. [Read more...]
